Batik housesThis versatile scarf is made from the silk of a Japanese kimono using traditional decorative techniques.

The dense, almost geometrical design of houses is created by drawing with a wax resist (roketsuzome) and then hand painted. Then the silk has been bound before re-dying to produce textured patterns like spiders’ webs, known as Kumo Shibori.

The colours are very earthy and relate to traditional natural dyes (although these are not). Dark reddish browns produced by safflowers and azuki beans, dark blue produced by indigo (Airo), and moss (kokuro).
