Dark blue flowers and frondsThis scarf is handmade from the silk of Japanese Kimonos.

The blue side has the design of imaginary flowers and fronds (Karasuka) created using the traditional technique of shibori, or tie dye. Before the fabric was dyed dark blue it was wrapped and sewn to create areas of resist.

Both pieces are rinzu silks and the basket weave design (Higaki) celebrates the craft of daily things whilst the key-fret (Sayagata) is frequently seen in Kimono and is associated with strength and with the Buddhist concept of eternity.

The beading is contemporary.
