bull rushThis classic scarf is hand made from the silk of a vintage Japanese kimono.

It depicts a design of bulrushes or cattails (gama no nakama) which are associated with a legend of healing a white hare in an ancient Japanese mythology. They are often therefore depicted with hares.

Cattails are useful plants. The underground rhizomes are edible, and the fluffy seed down was traditionally used to stuff garments and blankets such as Japanese futons. They also used in traditional Asian herbal medicine.

The fringe is also vintage silk, but Victorian and has been dyed and hand knotted to match.
