Dark green and gold checkThis stunning scarf is made from two Japanese vintage kimono. The light yellow side is a colour called Mushikuri-iro or steamed chestnut. It is a rinzu silk with a weave of leaves and maple leaves (momiji) depicted on branches in autumn, but not falling.

The dark green side is a Chirimen silk where the threads are twisted, a type of weaving, dating from the 16th Century. The pattern is hand painted and is a geometric design often used for the kimono of boys. It’s fluidity is reminiscent of fishing nets (ami) which are thought to be an inspiration of many such designs.
