This elaborate hanging is silk vintage Japanese kimono known as a Kuro-tomesode where the pattern travels around the bottom across the panels.

It depicts a forest of trees with the sun setting. It is made in the style of yuzen painting where rice paste is used to form an outline, which is then painted with flowing coloured dyes by hand.

The image has been embroidered with gold threads “couched” or laid on the fabric surface and stitched down with fine silk threads. The technique is called shusu.

The piece has been hung on a bespoke, handmade steel rail, designed to evoke golden sun and fire.
