Pink CranesThis lavish wall hanging is made from the silk of a vintage Japanese kimono, possibly a wedding or an Iro-Uchikake kimono which is worn as an outer garment.

The symbols of Cranes (tsuru) are linked to marriage, believed to live for a thousand years and inhabit the land of the immortals and symbolise longevity and good fortune. The pine tree (matsu) represents fidelity and the Chrysanthemum (kiku) a symbol of beauty and longevity.

The piece is also backed with kimono silk and hung with a silk obijime, a decorative cord which is used to tie around the middle of the obi or cumberbund, of formal kimono dress.
